Producing a Publication:
You're Not Just the Editor

Pamela Boyer Sayre, CG, CGL

So you want to be the editor of a regular publication? If you envision just putting your Composition 101 grammar skills to use with a red pen on a plentiful supply of quality manuscripts, you could be underestimating what is required of the editor. Most editors beg for articles, nag writers to meet deadlines, create acceptable advertisements from mere ideas, act as photographers, use desktop publishing software to design and lay out their publications, and spend hours on the phone with printers. Oh, yes—they also edit articles and check the facts in them, rewrite poorly worded concepts, improve or create new graphics to accompany the text, and shorten or lengthen articles or write last-minute items of their own to fit the available space. This lecture presents the truth about what is required of a good editor.
